Young men and women 14 to 17 years of age.

The Venturer program emphasizes having fun while encouraging teens to feel good about themselves, their friends and family, God, and the environment. Venturers helps teens advance their leadership skills and gain self confidence.

Venturers promotes activities that encourage teens to:

  • show that they care and live according to their personal values and religious beliefs
  • develop and use the skills of communicating, solving problems and making decisions
  • explore vocational opportunities
  • participate in a variety of social, cultural and spiritual activities
  • work cooperatively in adult-like settings
  • participate in challenging physical and outdoor activities
  • become aware of and respond to needs of the community and the environment

The Venturer program is built around a lively variety of activities based on personal and group interests. Venturing emphasizes outdoor and environmental activities, citizenship and community service, leadership and personal development, and career exploration. Individual interests and skills are recognized through an awards system.

The outdoors is an essential part of the Venturer program. Weekend events, extended hikes, no trace camping and seasonal sports opportunities round out the Venturer experience. Developing an active, healthy lifestyle is the prime goal. As well, Venturing helps teens learn new knowledge and skills that can lead to a satisfying career.

Venturers meet in a group called a company. Venturers develop and manage their own program with the help of an adult advisor. Each Venturer learns a promise and motto to help guide their personal development.

Venturer Promise:
On my honour
I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to God and the Queen
To help other people at all times,
And to carry out the spirit of the Scout Law.

Venturer Motto:
Challenge

Reann comments:
"I have been involved in the Scouting movement since I 6 and everything I have ever done while part of a group has been memorable. Every camp trip, event or exploration we have ventured on has left a lasting impression and will for the rest of my life. This is my first year in Venturers and I find it much different then all the past years because there is so much responsibility put on each member and it is not up to the leaders to make all the decisions. I feel that Venturers and all of the Scout movement is a great foundation for minors to have. There are so many learning and growing opportunities for everyone to take part in. Venturers is the next step I am taking and I assume that it will be a great step forward and onward in my life providing a great future for me to explore."

Tess writes:
"Venturers is an excellent opportunity for teens to be around other people with similar interests. We get to escape the city and go camping one weekend a month. This offers us a real opportunity to explore nature and leadership skills."

Olivier has this to say:
"Last February two of our Venturers planned and hosted a winter survival challenge where teams competed to survive with minimal equipment in  -30C weather. Each group researched and learned winter survival and shelter building techniques, and applied them to score points. Although the team from 2nd Westmount of Montreal, QC won, every Venturer left camp with a greater and more honed range of Scouting skills than when they first arrived. It was one of the best Scouting experiences I ever had, and is one reason why I decided to join this year at 17 and finish my tour as a Venturer. If I can share what skills I have with someone younger and just starting out, teach them how to brave a Canadian Winter in the woods and live to tell their friends; then I can honestly say I am proud to be a Scout."

Sam responds:
"I also attended the camp that Olivier spoke of. I completely agree with him. The camp was phenomenal and the lessons learned were invaluable. Olivier and I are currently planning another camp which will certainly top its predecessor. We will be posting information about the camp on this site so make sure to keep informed and attend this camp!"

Kelly writes:
"I like Venturers because it gives me more of a sense of leadership and business sense."

Aaron writes:
"I like Venturers because it gives a leadership role to youth and makes us understand how the world works."
